A nicely carved single 17thc oak caryatid, of a lady with folded arms and wearing an elaborate headdress and robe...the caryatid would have been originally applied to a piece of furniture or panelling, ....I always say I would have loved to have seen the piece of furniture that it came from, I'm sure it would have been very impressive....excellent colour & patina...

A caryatid is a sculpted female figure serving as an architectural support or decorative column. Popularised during classical antiquity, these figures were widely adopted in Northern European Renaissance and Baroque furniture design to ornament overmantels, cabinets, and panelling.

Oak was the predominant hardwood used for architectural carvings and furniture in seventeenth-century Flanders due to its durability and dense grain. Craftsmen hand-carved the dense timber using gouges and chisels before applying protective dark wax or oil finishes.
