19th century
Description

Size: 3ft 10in x 1ft 2in (116 x 35cm).

Antique Ersari Turkmen torba of scarce design, with a variation of the Chodor 'ertum' gul design to the central panel. Torba are shallow wall bags used mainly in tents or yurts for the storage of personal belongings, they were also used to decorate the sides of a camel in a wedding procession. Often only the piled face survives and the plain weave backs have been removed.

Circa 1880.

The torba is in fair good condition with slight even wear and good pile, the original plain back has been removed at some point in the torba's history. The torba has suffered in the past with some old moth damage (now extinct) and some edge losses, these are reflected in the price.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A torba is a small, horizontal woven bag traditionally created by nomadic Turkmen tribes of Central Asia for storing personal items inside a yurt.

They are hand-woven using natural hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation, dyed using organic dyes to create deep red, indigo, and ivory tones.

Authentic pieces feature natural dye variations, hand-tied knots, tribal guls specific to clans like the Ersari or Chodor, and flexible, hand-spun wool structures.

A torba can be mounted and framed as textured textile wall art, displayed along a narrow wall space, or laid on top of a console table or sideboard.

Keep the textile away from direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, vacuum gently without a rotary brush, and consult a professional textile conservator for cleaning.
