This nineteenth-century Gustavian commode stands as a solid and heavyweight chest of drawers fashioned from pine with a painted wood finish in a pale grey colour, paired with a contrasting black waxed solid wood top. The piece measures 79 cm high, 112 cm wide and 57.5 cm deep, presenting a rectangular arrangement with two smaller top drawers flanking a central section, above two larger drawers beneath, all detailed with brass swing handles, a reeded central section, dentil moulding, and tapered square feet. The design incorporates traditional Swedish pegging detail at the top and a decorative fluted breakfront centre section, with the unpainted back indicating its period construction. In a contemporary home, this chest of drawers suits placement in a living room, bedroom or hallway to provide functional storage surface space while maintaining a distinct historical aesthetic. The faded white painted surface over the pine frame and the brass hardware combine to create a balanced piece for interior settings requiring traditional nineteenth-century Scandinavian storage furniture.

FAQs

Swedish commodes from this period typically feature restrained Neoclassical architectural proportions, pale muted paint finishes, fluted or reeded carved detailing, and tapered legs inspired by French Louis XVI designs.

These storage pieces were commonly built using native European softwoods such as pine, finished with layers of gesso and mineral-based pale paints, complemented by cast brass handles and slate or wooden tops.

Authentic pieces feature signs of natural hand-carving, dovetail joints, hand-planed rear panels, and layered wear to the painted surface, particularly around knobs, handles, and lower trim.

Place the item against a neutral wall to act as a focal point, pairing it with clean-lined contemporary artwork or a carved wooden mirror above to balance historical detail with modern simplicity.

Clean gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth without water, waxes, or chemical solutions, which can strip delicate original paint and patina layers.
