Sheraton Revival Satinwood Serpentine Chest of Drawer

19th century
Description

A finely crafted serpentine-front chest of drawers in the Sheraton Revival taste, constructed in richly figured satinwood and decorated throughout with delicate hand-painted floral ornament. The shaped rectangular top, with gently bowed front, is bordered by a subtle line inlay and exhibits the characteristic soft sheen and fine, even grain of satinwood.

The front comprises three long, graduated drawers, each fitted with brass swan-neck handles mounted on decorative circular backplates. The drawer fronts are adorned with finely painted polychrome floral swags, ribbons, and trailing foliage, executed in a refined neoclassical manner that complements the warm golden ground. The serpentine outline continues through the shaped apron, and the piece stands on slender cabriole legs terminating in shaped feet.

The sides are veneered in bookmatched satinwood panels, framed by restrained line inlay, providing a balanced contrast to the more decorative front. The drawers are mahogany-lined, reflecting quality craftsmanship, and run smoothly.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sheraton Revival furniture refers to pieces produced during the late 19th and early 20th centuries that mirror the late 18th-century designs of Thomas Sheraton. Key characteristics include delicate proportions, straight lines or gentle serpentine curves, satinwood veneers, and classical decorative motifs such as painted floral garlands and urns.

These chests typically feature West Indian or East Indian satinwood veneers over a hardwood frame, often mahogany or pine. Construction incorporates hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, crossbanded timber borders, hand-painted polychrome decoration, and cast brass swan-neck or drop handles.

Authentic pieces display late Victorian or Edwardian cabinetmaking indicators, such as uniform drawer linings, precise dovetailing, and natural age-related oxidisation on the timber and brass hardware. Hand-painted detailing often exhibits minor surface craquelure under close inspection.

A satinwood chest functions as a focal point in a hallway, dressing room, or bedroom. Pairing light timber tones with neutral wall palettes, clean-lined contemporary lighting, and understated decorative accessories balances the detailed painted ornamentation.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry lint-free cloth. To preserve the painted decoration and timber surface, apply a high-grade beeswax paste sparingly once or twice a year, avoiding modern aerosol polishes and keeping the item away from direct sunlight or strong heat sources.
