Description

This fabulous 'bukcha' - a bag which was made for containing the large, flat wedding bread - was made by Yomut Turkmen in the trans-Caspian Steppes during the last quarter of the 19th century and a similar example is illustrated in my 3rd edition 'Tribal Rugs - Treasures of the Black Tent' on page 49.

However, an unusual and rare aspect of the design in this bukcha is the use of the 'kotchak' symbol on all four panels.

After the bread was presented to the bridegroom at the wedding ceremony, it was utilised by the bride for containing her most treasured small possessions. This was a highly-prized weaving and was never intended to be sold commercially.

It is woven in a specific way: four triangles are knotted to the sides of a rectangular flat-weave kilim and, when folded inwards, they form the envelope shape of the bukcha. Three flaps are sewn together with the upper flap being left loose to act as the opener.

Considered to rank as one of the most highly regarded weavings in a Turkmen collection, bukchas are now very rare and this beautiful piece has been completely preserved with its braided surrounding band containing tassels.

Size: 69cm x 69cm (2' 3" x 2' 3") excluding tassels.

A bukcha is a traditional envelope-style storage bag or wrapper crafted by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes in Central Asia, historically used for storing clothing, valuables, or bedding inside a yurt.

These pieces are typically hand-knotted or flat-woven using hand-spun wool, often featuring supplementary weft-wrapping or pile-woven face panels, dyed with natural madder reds and indigo.

Authenticity is determined by examining wool quality, natural dye oxidation, structural asymmetry from hand-spun yarns, and tribal-specific geometric motifs characteristic of groups like the Yomut or Tekke.

Such textiles are frequently mounted behind UV-protected glass as wall art or displayed as accent pieces in eclectic, maximalist, or refined rustic interiors to add texture and historical depth.

Preservation requires keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, avoiding high humidity, and gently vacuuming through a mesh screen on a low setting to remove dust without damaging fragile fibres.
