Large Decorative Antique Ushak Carpet. 453cm X 380cm.

Description

Probably english,early 20th century.

Large furnishing country house carpet in the ushak style.

Has some nice colours including a light green and light yellow.

Machine loomed wool pile on cotton foundations with the fringes and side cords hand finished.

Repair upper left corner (patch),some wear,couple of surface marks,everything imaged. Priced very reasonably.

Big sized carpet with the look and grace of the country house that were prevelant in so many houses at the turn of the early 20th century. Offered at a fraction of the bigger money.

14 foot 10 inches by 12 foot 6 inches. 453cm X 380cm. At widest points. Selvedges and fringes not measured in size.

Ushak carpets originate from the town of Usak in Western Anatolia, Turkey, which has been a major centre of rug production since the Ottoman Empire. These rugs are historically renowned for their large scale, soft colour palettes, and stylised floral or geometric medallion designs.

Traditional Ushak carpets are hand-knotted using wool on a wool or cotton foundation. The wool yarns are historically dyed with natural plant-based dyes, creating subtle colour variations known as abrash throughout the pile.

Authentic Ushak carpets feature Turkish double knots, a relatively loose knot density that produces a soft handle, and distinctive large-scale central medallions or repeating palmette motifs framed by wide patterned borders.
