The Tea Hour, Ca 1918: Intimist Bonnard-esque Interior Scene by Woman Artist Oil on Paper

1900 - 1920
Description

A rare and evocative oil on paper by Charlotte Stéphanie Henriette Chauchet-Guilleré (1878–1964), a formidable pioneer of the French Art Deco movement. This work captures a quiet, domestic moment—a "tea scene" that vibrates with the soft, dappled light and domestic warmth we often associate with Pierre Bonnard and the Les Nabis movement. With brushwork that is confident yet delicate, the painting has the richness of an oil painting but the raw intimacy of a sketch.

At a time when the upper echelons of the French art world were still almost exclusively male, Charlotte Chauchet-Guilleré broke through the "glass ceiling" of early 20th Century Paris. A central figure in the landmark 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs, she was a founding force behind "Atelier Primavera", the revolutionary design studio established in 1912 by Printemps, the iconic Paris department store. As one of the first major retailers to curate its own avant-garde aesthetic, Printemps sought to move away from the heavy styles of the 19th century. Under the artistic direction of Chauchet-Guilleré and her husband René, Primavera became a laboratory for the "New Art," employing young, progressive artists to create chic and accessible modernism. Our painting, dating from the early years of the studio (c. 1915-18), represents the height of this creative shift.

Measuring 36 x 56.5 cm at sight and signed at the lower right, the workis presented in a substantial, high-quality wooden frame with a deep forest-green mount that beautifully pulls out the subtle emerald tones in the tea service. The overall framed size is 69 x 84 cm

This Post-Impressionist painting is an oil on paper by Charlotte Stéphanie Henriette Chauchet-Guilleré, dating from the 1910 period. Executed in soft pink and pastel tones with subtle emerald and green hues, the intimist French Chateau style interior scene depicts a reclining female figure beside a tea set, striped textiles, and an armchair. The artwork is signed at the lower right and set inside a substantial wooden frame with a deep forest-green mount and a brass artist plaque on the bottom rail. The framed piece measures 69 cm high, 84 cm wide, and has a depth of 1 cm, while the sight size is 36 cm high and 56.5 cm wide. Displayed above a sideboard in a living room, dining room, or hallway, the painting brings domestic warmth and early 20th-century French modernism to a home today. The visible brushwork balances the richness of oil paint with the intimacy of a sketch, complemented by the clean moulding of the wooden frame. The artwork integrates smoothly into traditional and contemporary interiors alike, offering a historic domestic vignette rooted in the French Art Deco movement.

Intimism was a French Post-Impressionist style prevalent around the late 19th and early 20th centuries, focusing on quiet, domestic interior scenes and private personal moments. Artists of this movement used textured brushwork and subtle colour harmonies to convey atmosphere rather than high drama.

Artists during this era frequently applied oil paint to heavy rag paper, card, or board, often preparing the surface with a light gesso ground to prevent oil absorption while retaining a textured, matte finish.

Authentic pieces generally feature period-correct paper yellowing, natural surface craquelure, original gallery labels or artist signatures, and subtle signs of age to the timber framing and mounting board.

Position this style of painting as a focal point above a sideboard or console table in a bedroom, dressing room, or living area, pairing it with warm timber furniture to complement its muted tones.

Ensure the artwork is framed behind UV-filtering glass with an acid-free mat board to prevent off-gassing, and hang it away from direct sunlight, dampness, or direct heat sources.
