18th Century French Carved Frame Hall Bench

18th century
Description

This is a lovely quality, all original 18th/19th Century carved frame hall bench. I believe it is made from walnut and has a lovely patinated colour to it. The condition is superb as is the fineness of the carvings. One of the best features is the shaped stretcher which almost looks like Os De Mouton. Neat size and elegant wings. Old traces of wood worm but all treated. Green material isn't new but is clean although we can recover should you prefer.

Height 111cm Width 180cm Depth 66cm Depth of seat 56cm Height of seat 45cm

(On our website) If you would like this bench upholstered please click yes in the upholstery drop down menu. This would require 8 metres of material. You can supply your own or please get in touch and we will send you the list of fabric companies we work with.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An 18th-century French hall bench typically features a high-backed silhouette, hand-carved hardwood framing such as os-de-mouton legs, and padded upholstery designed originally for reception halls and entryways.

These benches were commonly constructed using solid hardwoods such as walnut or oak, combined with traditional webbing, natural horsehair padding, textile upholstery, and decorative brass tacks.

Authentic pieces display hand-carved timber details, pegged mortise and tenon joinery, asymmetric wear on stretchers, and signs of historic hand-forged upholstery tacks.

Position the piece against a neutral wall in a wide hallway, foyer, or living room to accentuate the carved wooden frame and rich upholstery colour.

Dust timber elements regularly with a microfibre cloth, apply natural beeswax sparingly to exposed wood, and vacuum fabric upholstery gently using a soft brush attachment.
