Pith paper paintings are watercolours or gouaches produced in China during the 18th and 19th centuries specifically for the Western export market. Created using thin sheets cut from the inner pith of the Tetrapanax papyrifer plant, these artworks depicted local customs, figures, trades, and landscapes for European travellers.

These artworks were painted using gouache or watercolour pigments applied directly onto translucent sheets of pith cut from the Tetrapanax papyrifer shrub. Pith is not true paper, as it consists of natural cellular plant tissue that absorbs pigment to create a luminous, textured surface effect.

Authentic 19th-century pith paintings display a velvety texture with fine pigment application and minor age-related characteristics such as hairline splits due to the fragile nature of the material. They feature classic Qing dynasty subjects, including court figures, costumes, and harbour scenes executed in rich gouache.

Display framed pith paper paintings as a pair on a narrow wall space or positioned above a console table or desk. Their detailed figural subjects and historic pigments complement traditional dark wood furniture as well as contrasting modern decor.

Frame pith paper artwork behind UV-protective glass with acid-free mounting materials to prevent fading and material degradation. Display the items away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high-humidity areas, as moisture and heat cause the delicate botanical pith structure to split or warp.
