Antique Yomut Turkmen bag face, possibly from a spindle bag, used for the storage of spinning bobbins.

Circa 1900.

A good small bag face with the Turkmen tree design to the central field with a rams horn border. The colours are mainly warm shades of madder red.

The bag face is in excellent condition with very slight wear and good pile.

Turkmen bag faces were woven by semi-nomadic tribes across Central Asia during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to serve both practical and decorative functions. These hand-knotted wool textiles formed the decorative fronts of functional storage bags, such as torbas, chuvals, and spindle bags, used inside yurts and during tribal migrations.

Traditional Turkmen textiles were constructed using locally sourced sheeps wool for both the pile and the foundation structure. The wool was hand-spun and dyed using natural plant and insect dyes, producing signature shades of terracotta, deep madder red, indigo blue, ivory, and dark brown.

Authentic pieces feature high knot density, soft hand-spun wool, and asymmetric or symmetric knotting specific to individual tribes such as the Yomut or Tekke. They display traditional geometric motifs, subtle colour variations known as abrash, and natural wear patterns consistent with age and nomadic utility.

Small tribal textiles and bag faces are frequently custom-framed under UV-protective glass as textile wall art. Alternatively, they can be mounted onto fabric backings or displayed flat on console tables and sideboards to introduce geometric texture and rich colour tones into modern interior schemes.
