A rustic, tribal antique Bakshaish carpet woven around 1850 and one of the best we have added to our inventory in recent years.  Bakshaish carpets were woven in large and smaller sizes and often with bolder geometric designs, and early natural dyes. Their designs can be quite abstract and often comprise of a central motif which sprawls out in one large design to the corner spandrels or with a smaller medallion inside a larger medallion.This Bakshaish however, has a wonderful all over design due to its age of around 170 odd years, using smaller geometric motifs and latch hook motifs, an earlier pattern see more often on carpets woven around the mid 19th century.  Sky blue dyes with exceptional dye change (abrash) subtly changing from lighter blues, to greenish shades to deeper blues, a truly fabulous palette of dyes.  The rustic terracotta border and outer border frames the main field beautifully.Older pieces, such as this Bakshaish, were more open than younger examples woven fr...
