19thc Cast Iron Paperweight - Perfect for the Bills!

19th century
Description

19th Century Cast Iron Figural Paperweight – A Humorous Desk Accent

A delightful 19th-century cast iron paperweight featuring a cheeky figural design of a gentleman caught in a moment of “morning routine.” Amusing yet tastefully rendered, this well-cast piece showcases the humour and craftsmanship typical of Victorian novelty desk items.

Solid and weighty, it is perfectly suited to keeping bills, letters, or documents in place, while also serving as a wonderful conversation starter. The casting detail is crisp, with a rich, aged patina consistent with its period.

A charming and slightly irreverent addition to any antique collection, study, or office setting.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Figural paperweights from the nineteenth century are heavy metal objects designed to hold loose papers flat on a desk, cast into sculpted human, animal, or character forms.

These items were produced using sand-casting moulds where molten iron was poured into carved sand impressions, then cooled, cleaned, and finished with paint, lacquer, or japanning.

Authentic period cast iron exhibits fine surface texture from original sand moulds, seam lines from two-part castings, natural patination or wear in high-contact areas, and substantial weight relative to size.

Position the item atop a stack of books on a coffee table, style it alongside leather-bound volumes on a bookshelf, or use it functionally on an office desk to anchor correspondence.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry brush and apply a thin layer of microcrystalline wax occasionally to protect the metal from humidity and prevent oxidation.
