Oil Painting of Spaniels by Frederick French

A wonderfully charming oil on canvas depicting two spaniels by the artist Frederick French (Fl 1896-1914). The animals are beautifully drawn in the English school manner of provincial animal painting. The dogs, one brown and the other liver spotted, are named on the work as Nell and Rainger, and are shown in a detailed landscape setting. The work is in good condition with some minor marks and touching in. The painting is signed to the lower left and dated 1896. There is little information about Frederick French he is typical of the provincial animal painters of the Victorian period in that he didn’t exhibit and appears to have travelled around painting horses, dogs and similar commercial animal scenes. The painting is framed in a period frame, which is in good condition with some old areas of restoration. The whole has a great decorative appeal and is ready to hang.
