Eighteenth Century Still Life Oil Painting

18th century
Description

A fine and impressive oil on canvas still life painting of flowers in an urn. The painting is very much in the Dutch golden age tradition of flower painting, with a large array of blooms including tulips, roses, honeysuckle, iris and delphinium. The work is unusual in that the flowers are arranged in a delft urn decorated in blue and white with a rural scene. The whole is very well painted but not unusually for this period is not signed. The work is in good condition it has been lined many years ago and has had some overpaint in the background. The painting is framed in a very good quality frame probably dating to the mid twentieth century which is in excellent untouched condition. The whole is an interesting example of early still life, most likely from France or Italy, and has a huge amount of decorative appeal. C.1780.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Eighteenth-century floral still life paintings often feature dramatic chiaroscuro lighting, highly detailed depictions of flowers, and ornate vessels set against dark backgrounds. Inspired by earlier Dutch Golden Age traditions, these works emphasized botanical variety and composition.

Paintings from this period were created using hand-ground mineral and organic pigments mixed with linseed oil, applied onto hand-stretched linen canvases and mounted in hand-carved giltwood frames.

Authentic period paintings typically display natural craquelure across the varnish, age-related oxidation on the canvas reverse, hand-forged stretcher nails, and period-appropriate carved frame construction.

Position the painting as a focal piece above a sideboard or mantelpiece, using dark backdrop paint or pairing it alongside contemporary furniture to create a balanced contrast.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight and heat sources, maintain stable indoor humidity levels, avoid chemical cleaning products, and dust the frame lightly with a soft brush.
