Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A Victorian kneehole desk is a type of writing table characterised by two side pedestals of drawers flanking a central recessed space, providing legroom for the user. Popularised in the 19th century, these desks were designed for domestic studies, libraries, and commercial offices.

These desks were commonly crafted from solid timbers such as oak or mahogany, overlaid with high-grade burr walnut veneers selected for their intricate grain patterns. Construction methods featured hand-dovetailed drawers, brass or wooden knob handles, and turned or plinth bases.

Authentic Victorian pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, original locks or maker stamps on drawer linings, and natural age-related patination on the veneer. The figure of burr walnut exhibits symmetrical book-matched grain, often accompanied by minor natural shrinkage marks consistent with 19th-century craftsmanship.

A Victorian kneehole desk functions well as a focal point in a contemporary home office or study when paired with modern lighting and minimalist seating. It can also serve as an elegant dressing table in a bedroom setting, combining historic character with functional storage.

Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or fading of the delicate veneer. Wax the wooden surfaces regularly with a high-quality beeswax polish using a soft cloth, following the grain to maintain the finish and nourish the timber.
