Gents 1960s Invicta Chronograph Wrist Watch

1940 - 1960
Description

Gents 1960s Invicta chronograph wrist watch.

The watch has the 17 jewel hand-winding movement, Landeron 149 for Invicta, which is working nicely.

The watch measures 37mm diameter excluding the winding crown, buttons and lugs. The case is stainless steel and it is in good condition with just light surface marking, nothing too serious at all. The back of the watch states that the watch is waterproof but, as with any vintage watch, it should be kept away from water and moisture.

The lens is in lovely condition (some white reflection showing in the photos).

The dial is signed Invicta, with the IV logo above, this logo was first registered by Invicta SA of La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1955. The dial is in good original condition with original hands. Two subsidiary dials, one for constant seconds and the other to record up to 45 minutes.

On the recorder sub dial, there are large markers at three, six and nine minutes. These were aimed at the business man who made international telephone calls which were very expensive at the time. The calls were rounded to chargeable chunks of three minutes and so watchmaking companies came up with this scale to help people control their call duration.

The chronograph is operated by pressing the top button to start and stop, the bottom button to re-set to zero.

It has a generic stainless steel bracelet which currently fits an 18.5cm wrist although there is capacity on the clasp to make it around 1.5cm smaller. There is some surface scratching to the clasp.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

Dealers Notes

ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (because of GPSR legislation, we no longer post items less than 100 years old to Europe, including Northern Ireland).

Please contact us regarding international shipping.

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.

We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.

Credit / debit card purchases up to £300 can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the 'Purchase Antique' button on each listing page. Alternatively, there is a Paypal payment link if you scroll down the page and we also accept bank transfers.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A chronograph wristwatch is a mechanical timepiece equipped with an independent stopwatch function, typically featuring dedicated sub-dials to measure elapsed seconds and minutes alongside standard timekeeping.

Mid-century chronographs were primarily built using stainless steel or chrome-plated cases, acrylic crystals, and hand-wound mechanical movements containing synthetic ruby bearings to lower internal friction.

Authentic examples display era-appropriate dial typography, clean mechanical calibre markings, period-correct case stampings, and integrated pushers that directly operate the internal chronograph levers.

A steel mid-century chronograph functions versatilely as a daily accessory, pairing seamlessly with modern tailored tailoring, casual knitwear, or unstructured denim outfits.

Mechanical timepieces require routine servicing by a professional watchmaker every three to five years, while avoiding water contact, magnetic fields, and significant physical impact.
