Description

A beautiful 18th Century Mahogany Chest On Chest of fabulous colour made using wonderfully figured veneers. In very good original condition retaining the original handles, locks, escutcheons and well shaped large Ogee bracket feet. 

The drawer linings made in oak are very clean and run perfectly. The detachable cornice is of good quality having a nicely made dental.

A fine example of its type. Circa 1760.

A tallboy, also known as a chest-on-chest, is an 18th-century storage piece comprising two stacked chests of drawers. Originating in the Georgian period, it provided ample vertical storage while maximising floor space.

18th-century tallboys were predominantly constructed from dense mahogany, walnut, or oak, featuring drawer linings made of oak or pine, joined with hand-cut dovetails and fitted with cast brass handles.

Authentic pieces feature hand-sawn drawer bottoms, uneven dovetail joints, hand-chiselled mortise-and-tenon frames, period brass drop handles with original cast marks, and age-related wear to drawer runners.
