Magnificent Japanese Taisho (1920s) Bronze Horse Sculpture, Kunio Itô

Superb Japanese Taisho (early 20thC) bronze horse ‘Shizuma’ (Silent Horse) by Kunio Itô (1880-1970), depicted standing foursquare on a rectangular rocky base. Signed on base. 31cm high x 35cm wide x 10cm deep, weight 6.5kg.
 
Excellent condition and patina.
 
Born in Iwate Prefecture, Kunio Itô devoted his life to the creation of horse statues, exhibiting with the Bunten National Exhibition and the Exhibition of the National Art Society, among others. His work ‘Rush of a Gun Carriage’ (horses pulling a gun carriage through the mud) is held in the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, while his sculpture of the Meiji Emperor’s Horse stands among 700 cherry trees in Atago Park (Noheji), Aomori prefecture, and two large sculptures of a horse and a horse with its foal are in the grounds of the Hokkaido Agricultural School.
