Introduction

A distinguished Georgian oil portrait depicting Captain Gamaliel Nightingale in formal Royal Navy uniform.

Bonhams catalogued the unsigned painting directly as a work by John Simmons rather than merely attributed to him.

Nightingale is shown half length against a restrained background wearing a deep blue naval coat with white linen and gilt details.

The Sitter

Nightingale entered the Royal Naval Academy in 1744.

He became Commander of HMS Badger in 1757 and was promoted Captain on 18 October 1758.

He subsequently commanded HMS Vengeance and HMS Flora during the Seven Years War.

His service included the events surrounding Quiberon Bay in 1759 and the capture of the French privateer Entreprenant in March 1761.

Nightingale Island was subsequently named in his honour.

The Sitter
