Description

Fine French antique (19thC) large bronze statue of Diana of Gabii (Artemis), a Grand Tour-era reproduction of the famous ancient marble statue attributed to Praxiteles (now in the Louvre). She is depicted in the middle of pinning her mantle, holding a fibula in her right hand, lifting a fold to her right shoulder, while her left hand lifts another piece towards her chest, causing the collar to fall leaving her shoulder exposed. Good quality casting. 51cm high x 15cm x 13cm (base), 8.5kg.

Excellent condition

The original marble statue was discovered in 1792 by Scottish archaeologist Gavin Hamilton on the property of the Prince Borghese at Gabii, near Rome, and was added to the prince's collection. In 1807, suffering from financial difficulties, the prince was forced to sell the statue to Napoleon and it has been on display in the Louvre since 1820.
