French antique (1920s) bronze sculpture of a nude female faun or satyr reclining on a circular vine covered trellis by George Omerth (1895-1925). Marble base. Signed ‘G. Omerth’ on the base with the letter ‘t’ missing. 25cm high x 16.5cm wide x 9.7cm deep, 2.3kg.
 
Very good condition, some marks on marble base. The light areas in the photos are due the artificial light and/or flash - there is no excessive wear on the statue.
 
Georges Omerth was born in 1895 in a small town in the south of France. He showed an early interest in art, and at the age of just eighteen he began studying sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1919 he exhibited his first work, a bust of his friend Maurice Bourgeois, at the Salon d’Automne. Omerth’s art was heavily influenced by the Art Deco movement, which was popular at that time. He died tragically young in 1925 (aged 30), but left behind a body of work that is considered some of the finest examples of French Art Deco sculpture. Omerth was a...
