Indian Raj Period Hand-engraved Brass Jardiničre, Late 19th Century

£500    $679    €573
An Indian interior jardiničre from the British Raj period, dating to the later 19th century, circa 1870–1890. The vessel is produced from hand-worked brass with a high copper content, shaped from sheet metal and decorated with repoussé and engraved ornament of notable density.

The body features layered foliate borders and a continuous central frieze with stylised figures, animals and foliage, executed freehand with punches and chisels. The surface treatment is lively and irregular, reflecting traditional North Indian metalworking rather than mechanical repetition. Cast elephant-head ring handles are applied to each side, a familiar motif in Indian colonial decorative metalwork made for the European interior market.

The surface retains a rich, naturally developed patina which enhances the engraved relief and contributes to the object’s visual depth. Large brass jardiničres of this quality and scale are increasingly sought after as decorative interior pieces.
