Fireside bellows have been utilised for centuries to direct a stream of air into a fire, increasing oxygen supply to ignite or revive flames efficiently before the advent of central heating.

Traditional bellows are typically constructed using solid hardwoods such as mahogany or oak for the paddle panels, flexible leather for the chamber sides, brass or copper for the nozzle and tacks, and internal wooden spring mechanisms.

Authentic pieces often exhibit hand-turned wooden elements, hand-beaten brass tacks, genuine aged leather with natural patination, and traditional joinery methods rather than modern machine-cut fasteners or synthetic adhesives.

They can be displayed resting on a hearth, hung beside a fireplace using a traditional hook, or placed on a mantelpiece as a functional decorative object to add historic texture to a room.

Preservation involves keeping the leather supple with a suitable leather conditioner, dusting the wood gently, and avoiding placement near direct, intense heat sources that could dry out and crack the materials.
