Antique Indian Delhi Silk Embroidery on Green Velvet Ground, Circa 1900.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 4ft 3in x 4ft 1in (130 x 125cm).

Antique Indian silk embroidery on a green velvet ground.

Circa 1900.

This fine embroidery originates from Delhi, India. The embroidery is in silk and is of the traditional floral boteh design. The embroidery is stitched onto a later green velvet corduroy ground. The shape of the ground and the braiding attached at the lower end suggest that this may have been used as a horse cover or made to look like one.

The condition is excellent with very slight wear, the stitching holding the embroidery to the ground is loose / missing in places, this is reflected in the price.

This embroidery would make a good wall hanging or could be used as a cover.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced during the late 19th and early 20th centuries in regions such as Delhi and Agra, these textiles were crafted for both local royalty and the European export trade seeking luxurious Orientalist decorative goods.

Craftsmen applied fine silk threads onto velvet grounds, utilizing dense needlework styles like zardozi or satin stitch to render elaborate boteh patterns, framed borders, and decorative spandrels.

Authentic period examples exhibit slight irregularities in hand-stitching, natural fading or patination of the velvet pile, hand-knotted fringe embellishments, and aged cotton backing fabric.

These textiles can be mounted inside a custom acrylic frame for wall hanging, layered over a sideboard top, or draped across upholstered seating to introduce historical texture.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and moisture, dust gently using low-suction vacuuming through a protective screen, and consult a professional textile conservator for deep cleaning.
