Antique Persian Rasht Embroidery with Star Medallion, Silk on Red Felt, Circa 1900.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 5ft 1in x 4ft 11in (154 x 151cm).

Antique Persian Rasht embroidery in silk on red felt.

Circa 1900.

This outstanding example has a fine classical design with a large central star medallion and all over floral design. The embroidery work in silk is very fine and detailed.

Woven in the city of Rasht in Northern Persia on the Black Sea coast, known as Rashti-Duzis they are famed for their intricately embroidered details and borders.

Christies auction house writes as follows: 'From the Safavid period onwards, the city of Rasht in Persia supplied the Safavid courts at Ardebil and Tabriz with highly sophisticated embroideries, known as rasht-duzi textiles. They were executed primarily by professional male embroiderers in well-established workshops, and in the Qajar period served as saddle covers, floor covers and hangings within impressive courtly tents (Wearden, 1991, p.122).

The gul-duzi-i-rasht (stitched inlay) technique was complex and entailed cutting a shape out of the ground fabric and replacing it with a carefully cut fabric of the same shape in a contrasting colour. In order to establish the necessary precision of each piece, Wearden suggests that a sharp instrument was used, much like a biscuit cutter, before the joins were disguised by fine embroidery which also served to refine the details of the design (Wearden, 1991, p.121).

The designs are clearly inspired by Persian medallion carpets. Further Rasht textiles of a medallion design include one housed in the Museum der Kulturen Basel, published in HALI, no.143, 2005, p.114, and one sold at Christie’s, New York, 14-15 December 2015, lot 643'.

The embroidery is in excellent original condition. This textile would make a great wall hanging or could be used as a cover.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Rasht embroidery, originating from the Gilan province in northern Iran, is a traditional needlework art form created by stitching silk threads and felt applique onto a heavy wool felt base.

Traditional pieces are crafted using a base of felted wool fabric, decorated with multi-coloured silk threads using chain stitch, couching, and patchwork applique techniques.

Authentic pieces from the Qajar period typically display hand-spun wool felt, natural dye variation, intricate floral and medallion motifs, and precise hand stitching visible on the reverse side.

Textiles of this nature can be custom framed behind UV-protective glass as focal wall art, laid across a sideboard top, or displayed over a decorative textile hanger in contemporary spaces.

Keep the textile away from direct sunlight and humidity, clean only using professional conservation methods, and avoid folding the fabric directly to prevent permanent creasing of the wool fibers.
