Description

Fabulous early silk embroidery on cotton ground from Uzbekistan. One of the very best Nurata suzani, with a field packed with various beautiful flowers. In each corner a magnificent bouquet issues from a vase and several jugs are placed randomly, a symbol of how important water is in the desert.

While the embroidery itself is in excellent condition, the very fine cotton background has not withstood the test of time so well and has had to be conserved and patched in places, professionally.

Now secure and ready for display.

Nurata suzanis originate from the town of Nurata in Uzbekistan and are historically celebrated for their fine silk embroidery on cotton or linen foundations, characterised by intricate floral sprays and garden motifs.

Authentic period pieces are traditionally hand-stitched using dyed silk thread on a hand-woven cotton or linen ground, frequently employing tambour work, chain stitch, or basma stitch techniques.

Authentication involves examining the natural vegetable dyes, hand-spun base fabrics, irregularities in hand-stitching, and traditional motifs characteristic of specific Uzbek regional workshops.

These large textiles are commonly mounted professionally behind glass or stretched onto canvas frames to serve as striking wall art in contemporary living spaces.

Preservation requires avoiding direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, keeping them away from high humidity, and consulting a textile conservator for professional cleaning rather than washing them at home.
