This 19th century Italian Rococo Revival bombe commode chest of drawers is created from wood with a sage green polychrome paint finish, brass hardware, and intricate hand-painted Venetian landscape scenes and floral cartouches. The piece stands on low cabriole legs, measuring 126 cm wide, 94 cm high, and 53 cm deep. The design incorporates a shaped bombe body, ornate brass handles on each drawer, and detailed decorative painted panels across the front and top surfaces, showing natural signs of antique distress and wear. Suitable for placement as a statement chest of drawers in a bedroom, hallway, or living room, this furniture piece stores clothing, linens, or household items. The flat top surface provides a display area for decorative objects, lamps, or framed photographs while adding artistic colour and traditional style to the interior space.

FAQs

A Venetian painted commode is a decorative chest of drawers originating from or styled after 18th and 19th-century Italian designs, characterised by curvilinear bombe contours and hand-painted surface ornamentation.

These commodes were typically constructed from timber frames covered with gesso preparation layers, decorated using polychrome paints and varnish coats, and fitted with cast brass hardware.

Authentic examples exhibit physical indications of age including natural paint craquelure, hand-dovetailed joint construction, light wear around handles, and hand-applied brushwork rather than stencilled patterns.

A painted commode serves as a focal accent piece in an entrance hall, dining space, or bedroom, bringing decorative texture into contemporary interior schemes.

Maintain painted timber by placing it away from direct heat and sunlight, dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, and avoiding liquid solvents or harsh abrasive cleaners.
