Pair of Antique Chinese Carved Wood Foo Dog Statues

19th century
Description

A large and extremely impressive pair of antique Chinese carved wood foo dog statues. They date from the 19th century and are genuine antiques, not to be confused with the many contrived versions more commonly seen. They were most likely made in China, or possibly in Tibet.

The quality is outstanding, they are beautifully carved from one solid block of wood. They have amazing details, with lots of character and charm.

The condition is excellent for their age, they have acquired an absolutely gorgeous patina over the years. There is just one small chip to the wood on the lower edge of one foot, seen in the images.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chinese foo dogs, traditionally known as imperial guardian lions, originated in Chinese Buddhism as protective symbols placed outside temples, palaces, and residences to ward off negative energy and signify high social status.

Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding wet cleaning or chemical polishes that could damage original lacquer or fragile gilding. Keep the wood in a climate-controlled environment away from direct heat and sunlight.

A pair of carved wooden foo dogs can be styled symmetrically on a modern sideboard, mantelpiece, or shelving unit to create visual balance and add historic texture to a contemporary space.

Authenticity can be identified through evidence of traditional joinery, natural age-related cracking along the timber grain, hand-tool marks beneath the surface, and historical wear on original polychrome or gilded finishes.

Traditional Chinese foo dogs were commonly hand-carved from solid woods such as camphor, elm, or cypress, often finished with polychrome paint, lacquer, or gold leaf gilding.
