Description

Regency Mahogany Chest of Drawers Trafalgar Sacred to Nelson Handles C1810, 98cm.

A handsome Regency mahogany, 2 over 2 mahogany chest of drawers, circa 1810 with original Trafalgar Sacred To Nelson brass handles.

A well proportioned and well constructed chest of drawers of elegant proportions, sitting well upon bracket feet.

A rare to find Chest of drawers, furnished with its original Regency, brass celebratory handles in acknowledgement to the victory at Trafalgar and the memory of Admiral Lord Nelson, a fine thing.

The chest is original and structurally excellent, it shows evidence of some historic repairs to veneer and some minimal cosmetic veneer edge chips but marginal and easy repairs, it has some sun bleached colour to the front which enhances its patination, an otherwise excellent piece in mostly untouched condition. Priced sensibly to reflect. We may end listing and consign to our workshop to address the minor cosmetic issues and relist at higher price, until then available.

Regency furniture, spanning roughly from 1811 to 1820, is characterised by classical proportions, inspired by ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian designs, often featuring fine veneers and restrained ornamentation.

Master craftsmen typically used solid timbers such as mahogany or oak for the structural frames, often applying highly figured flame mahogany veneers to the drawer fronts for decorative visual depth.

Authenticity is determined by hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction, timber shrinkage consistent with age, period-appropriate brass hardware, and secondary woods like pine or oak used internally.

Positioning a period timber chest in a contemporary space introduces texture and warmth, serving as a functional storage unit or a focal surface beneath a large mirror or artwork.

Maintain stable indoor humidity and temperature levels away from direct heat sources to prevent timber splitting, and clean surfaces using a soft, dry cloth without applying modern silicone-based polishes.
