Set of 6 large early C19th panoramic engravings of London views by William Daniell.

Smart set of 6 black-and-white engravings in giltwood frames, after the original pictures by William Daniell, engraved and published by him 1804-1805 . The panoramas showing London vistas of the Thames and the city .

Numbered and inscribed in the margin , central front .

Reframed and mounted in the 1970’s by a London gallery , bearing their label to verso .

In excellent original condition, good clear images , quality frames and sympathetically chosen coloured mounts (one glass at present cracked , will be replaced prior to sale)

A smart large-scale set of panoramas of the capital , featuring iconic views of the city in the early nineteenth century.

* William Daniell RA (1769 -1837) was an English painter and print-maker who specialised in landscape and marine subjects. He travelled around India producing watercolours of the continent, on his return to Britain he travelled around the coast and produced a watercolour collection “A Voyage Round Great Britain” of coastal scenes. His work was exhibited at the Royal Academy and the British Institution , and he became a Royal Academician in 1822 .

Panoramic engravings from the early nineteenth century are wide-format printed illustrations that capture expansive landscape or cityscape views. Executed via copperplate engraving or aquatint methods, these works documented urban growth, maritime activities, and topographical landmarks with precise architectural detail.

Historic prints were created using heavy hand-made rag paper printed with oil-based inks from etched or engraved copper plates. Original aquatints often featured hand-applied watercolour washes or tonal monochrome etching to create subtle gradations of light and shadow.

Authentic period prints display a clear indentation along the paper border known as a plate mark, left by the pressure of the metal plate during printing. They also feature etched publication lines along the bottom margin, including the artists name, engraver, publisher address, and publication date.
