Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Boulle style furniture originated in 17th-century France under master cabinetmaker Andre-Charles Boulle, who popularised metal and tortoiseshell marquetry. During the Second Empire under Napoleon III in the mid-19th century, French craftsmen revived these intricate baroque designs, creating substantial credenzas and cabinets featuring ebonised wood and gilded mounts.

Traditional Boulle credenzas combine ebonised timber structures with inlaid brass sheet metal and natural tortoiseshell patterns. Additional components often include cast bronze or brass ormolu mounts, glass display doors, and solid marble or ebonised tops.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display hand-cut brass marquetry flush with the surrounding tortoiseshell, heavy hand-chased gilt-bronze mounts secured with screws rather than modern fixings, and secondary timber framing such as oak or pine showing natural age and hand-planing marks.

A Boulle credenza serves as a focal anchor piece along a formal dining room wall or wide entrance hall. Pairing the dark ebonised finish and brass detailing with neutral wall tones and minimal contemporary artwork balances the visual weight of the historical ornament.

Maintain a stable relative humidity to prevent the brass and tortoiseshell layers from expanding and lifting off the timber substrate. Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth, avoid liquid polishes or harsh chemical solvents, and keep the object away from direct heat sources and sunlight.
