Small 18th Century Mahogany Chest of Drawers

18th century
For Sale by Holmes Antiques
Description

A Fine 18th Century Mahogany Chest Of Drawers of absolutely wonderful untouched rich warm colour and patina. In finest quality figured Mahogany having extremely fine Box wood stringing and cross banding to the drawer fronts and top, the cockbeading to the edge of the drawers has unusually been made in fruitwood, this has developed a beautiful light glowing colour and burnished patina over the years.

The soft glow of the uncleaned period brass handles adds further to the beauty of this piece of such pleasing small proportions. The nicely shaped curved bracket feet are completely original as remarkably is the blocking to the underneath. On the underneath of the piece are four nails, one with a scrap of paper attached, we believe this was probably an original makers label, what a shame it has now gone and there is no trace of where this lovely quality little chest was made.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian chest of drawers is a piece of case furniture produced in Britain between 1714 and 1830, characterised by classical proportions, solid wood construction, bracket or bracket-style feet, and cast brass hardware.

Eighteenth-century examples were primarily crafted using dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany for visible surfaces, with secondary timber such as pine or oak utilised for drawer linings and back panels.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer linings, hand-planed backboards, original brass swan-neck or bail handles, and natural wear patterns around keyholes and feet consistent with age.

Place the chest against a neutral or boldly painted wall to display the dark timber grain, and complement the top surface with modern ceramics, framed prints, or modern table lamps.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and bright sunlight to prevent splitting or fading, dust regularly with a soft lint-free cloth, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually.
