Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Louis XVI giltwood seating is defined by Neoclassical proportions, linear frames, fluted tapered legs, and carved architectural details such as ribbons or guilloche. The wooden frames were layered with gesso and gilded with gold leaf to create a reflective surface for formal reception rooms.

These settees were crafted using carved hardwood frames, typically beech or walnut, coated in plaster-based gesso and finished with genuine gold leafing. Internal upholstery traditionally incorporated webbed jute strapping, coiled steel springs, horsehair padding, and natural linen or silk textiles.

Authentic period pieces show hand-carved tool marks, red or grey bole clay under layers showing through worn gilding, and traditional pegged mortise-and-tenon joinery. Age-related shrinkage along frame joints and slight oxidisation of the gilded layer are also typical characteristics.

Position the piece as a focal point against a neutral backdrop, pairing its ornate metallic frame with minimalist architecture or contemporary art. Reupholstering in plain linen, wool, or velvet bridges historical ornament with modern interior schemes.

Dust giltwood gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or damp cloths that dissolve the water-gesso binder. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent cracking or lifting of the gold leaf.
