George Weatherill 1810-1890.One of Yorkshires finest watercolourists,George Weatherill spent his entire life in the Whitby area.Though painting only in his spare time until the age of fifty,he developed such a reputation as an artist he became known as ‘ Turner of the North ‘.He exhibited a mere half dozen pictures in metropolitan exhibitions,the Society of British Artists and the Dudley Gallery,and was mainly patronised by Northern industrialists and merchants. ‘Whitby Abbey at Sunset’ signed watercolour,indistinctly dated, image size 13x19 cms ,framed size 32.5x38 cms ; provenance with Abbot and Holder
