Description

An openwork brass and mixed-metal dish of exceptional quality, Meiji period c. 1890. The central medallion portrays Benzaiten, goddess of music and eloquence, riding a dragon above stylised waves. The dish is worked in brass with inlaid and overlaid mixed metals, chased, pierced and gilt to achieve a sculptural effect.

As the samurai era ended, Kyoto armourers redirected their artistry towards luxury metalwork for export — chargers and vases richly damascened in gold and silver. This Komai-style example represents that refined tradition.

An excellent example with no cracks, losses or repairs. The metal has developed a warm and consistent patina that enhances the fine chased detail and craftsmanship.
