This nineteenth-century Animalier sculpture depicts a hunting hound in a tracking pose, capturing the dog with its head lowered to the ground as if following a scent trail. The piece is rendered in a dark brown patinated bronze with a detailed casting that shows muscular definition, long drooping ears, and a curled tail. The hound stands upon a naturalistic bronze ground decorated with cast flowers and plants, which is in turn mounted on a rough-hewn white marble plinth with a textured rocky finish around the perimeter. The entire sculpture measures 14 cm wide by 9.5 cm tall by 9.5 cm deep. This decorative bronze makes a characterful addition to a gentleman's library or office desk, offering a traditional academic accent for a workspace or study. It suits placement on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or desktop alongside books and paperweights. The compact scale allows it to sit comfortably within smaller display spaces while providing a focal point that reflects classic nineteenth-century animal sculpture themes.

FAQs

The Animalier movement originated in nineteenth-century France, focusing on detailed and anatomically accurate sculptures of animals, particularly dogs, horses, and wild game.

These figures were cast in solid bronze using either the lost-wax or sand-casting method, frequently finished with a hand-applied chemical patina and mounted on marble or stone bases.

Authentic period bronzes display finely hand-chased surface details, natural patination wear around high points, cast weight consistent with solid metal, and often feature foundry marks or artist signatures near the base.

Display the sculpture on a mahogany desk, mantelpiece, or styled bookshelf alongside textured ceramics and bound volumes to ground the room with sculptural interest.

Dust regularly using a soft horsehair brush or dry microfibre cloth, and apply a thin layer of microcrystalline wax once a year to guard against oxidisation and moisture.
