Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

FAQs

Burr walnut refers to the unique, swirled grain pattern taken from the knot growths of walnut trees. It gained immense popularity in English furniture making during the late 17th century in the William and Mary period, and saw a significant revival during the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

Authentic pieces typically feature fine burr walnut veneers applied to secondary softwood or oak carcases using traditional hot animal glues. Dovetail joints are standard on drawer construction, accompanied by solid brass drop handles and escutcheons.

Authentication relies on examining the hand-cut dovetails, the irregularity and depth of the natural burr grain patterns, and signs of age-related oxidisation and shrinkage in the timber veneers. Hand-beveled drawer linings and old brass hardware are also key indicators.

An antique walnut chest serves as a strong focal point in contemporary spaces when paired with minimalist surroundings, clean-lined modern art, or neutral walls, creating a balanced contrast between old and new design elements.

Preserve antique veneer by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the glue from drying and the wood from cracking. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the surface.
