This 18th century Italian commode chest is made from walnut, fruitwood, and other exotic woods in a warm brown colour with solid cross-grain edging. The breakfront form incorporates a bold parquetry inlaid top with geometric patterns, a shallow top drawer above two deeper drawers, and canted corners inlaid with boxwood and ebony. Further decorative elements include a Greek key border motif on the drawer fronts, a shaped lower frieze, and short cabriole legs. The piece retains original oval brass drop handles and escutcheons on the drawers. Visible details include minor signs of wear associated with age and use across the wooden surfaces. Measuring 84 cm high, 130 cm wide, and 61 cm deep, the chest provides practical storage space for a hallway, bedroom, or living area. The flat top surface accommodates lamps, photographs, or decorative items, while the three graduated drawers hold household items, linens, or clothing. The traditional design and rich timber tones integrate easily into both classical and contemporary interior schemes.

An 18th-century Italian commode is a decorative chest of drawers characterised by intricate marquetry, geometric parquetry inlay, and curved or breakfront structural forms originating from the Italian Rococo and Neoclassical periods.

Craftsmen constructed these chests using timber frames such as pine or walnut, veneered with cut woods including walnut, olivewood, and fruitwood, paired with cast brass handles and decorative keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-sawn dovetail joinery, original brass hardware displaying natural surface oxidisation, hand-cut geometric wood veneers, and minor wood shrinkage consistent with age.

Position the chest as a focal feature in an entryway, hallway, or drawing room, balancing its intricate woodwork by mounting a large mirror or structured artwork directly above it.

Keep the chest positioned away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer lifting; dust regularly with a dry cloth and apply natural beeswax sparingly along the wood grain.
