Arts and Crafts Silver Angel Relief

19th century
Description

A fine and interesting Arts and Crafts period angel relief in silver. The angel is represented with three pairs of wings making it likely one of the highest of all angels a Seraph. The piece is created in raised relief with the design having been beaten out from behind in repousse fashion. The work is not signed and the silver is not marked but has been tested. The silver panel is mounted in an oak frame which once would have been a door probably for a table reliquary etc. The panel is framed in a good quality nineteenth century ebonised frame with gilt slip. The whole has a great look and represents a fine piece of Arts and Crafts metal work. C.1890.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late 19th century as a reaction against mass industrialisation, the Arts and Crafts movement emphasised hand craftsmanship, visible construction techniques, and medieval or naturalistic symbolism.

Crafters frequently used hand-chased or repousse metals such as copper, brass, and silver plating, often set within moulded oak, ebonised timber, or walnut frames.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand-hammering, slight organic irregularities in the metal surface, period-appropriate timber frames, and hand-applied patination.

Relief plaques work well integrated into a curated gallery wall, leaning against a dark painted backdrop on a mantelpiece, or hung in a narrow hallway space.

Dust gently with a soft dry brush or lint-free cloth, avoiding abrasive silver creams or chemical cleaners that strip away original surface patination.
