This is a difficult rug to place. The weaving area of Gendje was a melting pot of designs from the surrounding regions and sometimes the label is applied when the rugs show strong Caucasian designs but with cruder construction. It is important to understand the difficulty of precise attribution and in this case I choose Gendje but with a question mark in brackets. It is later than many of my rugs with a couple of synthetic dyes but I think it has real presence with its recipcrocal maze design
The pile is fairly low over most of the rug with the usual corrosion to the black wool. One end has lost some of its outer border but the other is complete as are the sides with minor selvedge repairs towards the damaged end.
