Khamseh rugs are hand-knotted carpets produced by a confederation of five nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes in southwestern Persia, known for their distinctive dark wools and geometric motifs.

These rugs are traditionally hand-knotted using locally sourced handspun wool for both the pile and the foundation, often employing symmetrical or asymmetrical knots on a wool warp and weft.

Authenticity is assessed through the analysis of knot density, natural dye variations, wool quality, characteristic blue-black foundation wool, and traditional tribal iconography such as boteh motifs.

An antique tribal rug functions effectively as a grounding element on hardwood floors, adding texture and colour to neutral contemporary spaces or layering over larger sisal carpets.

Preservation involves regular gentle vacuuming without the beater bar, professional organic washing when necessary, and avoiding direct, prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight to protect natural dyes.
