Description

Small, square Qashqa'i rugs are uncommon and this charming rug contains the 'scorpion' in the central ivory lozenge. The scorpion symbol was used a great deal by the Qashqa'i tribes and its purpose was to keep live scorpions from entering the central field of the rug! Having sat on similar types of rugs with scorpion symbols during my stay amongst the Qashqa'i, I can say that sometimes the scorpions kept well away and at other times, were brave enough to enter!!

This elegant small rug was made around 1880 and is in good condition albeit with some areas of slight wear.

Size: 157m x 1.32m (5' 2" x 4' 4").

Qashqai rugs are hand-woven by the nomadic Qashqai confederacy in the Fars province of south-west Persia, known for producing textiles with rich geometric motifs and deep cultural symbolism.

These authentic carpets typically feature hand-spun wool for both the pile and foundation, often utilising natural vegetable dyes such as madder root and indigo to achieve their characteristic colour palette.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the knot density, hand-spun wool characteristics, natural dye variations, irregular abrasions, and traditional tribal motifs such as diamond medallions and stylized flora.

An antique tribal rug adds warmth and texture when paired with neutral upholstery, minimalist contemporary furniture, or layered over natural timber flooring to anchor a living space.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional organic washing when needed, and avoiding direct, prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight to protect natural dyes.
