A rare beauty, probably made in or near Ghiordes in the West of Turkey. This Ottoman prayer rug would have been made in a workshop for a wealthy patron or member of the royal family. Ottoman prayer rugs from the 18th century typically feature a central architectural niche, known as a mihrab, designed to direct the placement of the rug during prayer, accompanied by intricate floral motifs and geometric borders.

These pieces were meticulously hand-knotted using natural dyed wool or sometimes silk for the pile, set upon a wool or cotton foundation with tightly woven asymmetrical or symmetrical knots.

Authenticity is assessed through the analysis of knot density, natural colour variations from organic dyes, wear patterns consistent with age, and traditional regional motifs characteristic of Anatolian weaving centres.

An antique textile of this scale can be used to ground a contemporary seating area or displayed as wall art to add historical depth and rich texture to minimalist spaces.

Preservation requires professional gentle cleaning, avoiding direct prolonged sunlight to prevent fading, and using a breathable rug underlay to protect the historic fibres from friction.
