Antique Bessarabian Kilim

1900 - 1920
Description

A rare green background on this decorative antique Bessarabian Kilim woven around 1920-30 in fabulous original condition.  The border colour is a wonderful deep cherry red, with soft pinks and pale blues for the floral detailing.  Green dyes were expensive to make, so we rarely come across this colour in rugs and kilims, but it is a wonderful natural dye.

We always supply anti-slip underlay included in the price with our kilims, as they are flat-woven and have no wool pile, they are prone to moving around on the floor.  Our underlay stops this and removes creases too, making them look wonderful in situ.

Bessarabian rugs and carpets are the commonly given name for rugs in pile and tapestry technique originating in Ukraine and Moldova during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  Some scholars will classify flat-woven carpets as Bessarabian, while referring to knotted-pile carpets as Ukrainian. They are predominantly from an area corresponding to modern Bulgaria and Romania. Produced under late Ottoman rule, they stand right on the cusp of European and Oriental carpet weaving.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Bessarabian kilims originate from the historic region encompassing modern-day Moldova and parts of Ukraine, woven primarily during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Unlike conventional Oriental carpets, these flatweaves were heavily influenced by French tapestry designs, particularly Aubusson motifs, featuring stylized floral patterns set against solid fields.

These textiles are handwoven using natural wool yarns for both the warp and weft on traditional looms. They utilize a flatweave tapestry technique, creating a durable, pileless rug with crisp colour boundaries and visible hand-spun wool texture.

Authentic period pieces are identifiable by their pileless flatweave weave, hand-spun wool yarns, and stylized naturalistic floral patterns inspired by European motifs. The colour palettes frequently incorporate deep reds, teals, pinks, and dark grounds derived from natural vegetable dyes.

A floral Bessarabian kilim introduces pattern and colour when layered beneath neutral furniture in a living room, dining space, or bedroom. Its structured floral grid functions equally well within modern minimalist settings and classical English Country interiors.

Regular maintenance requires low-suction vacuuming without a rotating beater bar to avoid damaging the woven wool fibres. Liquid spills should be blotted immediately with a clean, dry cloth, and professional cleaning should be performed exclusively by an antique textile specialist.
