FAQs

Topographical watercolour paintings from the early 19th century focus on accurate geographical features, coastlines, and architectural structures, often created as field sketches by amateur or military artists.

Early 19th-century watercolours were typically rendered on handmade rag paper using natural mineral or botanical pigments bound with water-soluble mediums such as gum arabic.

Authentic period watercolours usually exhibit signs of age-appropriate paper toning, foxing, period-correct inscriptions or inscriptions in iron gall ink, and subtle fading consistent with natural pigments.

Mount the artwork in an understated timber or gilded frame with conservation matting, placing it within a gallery wall or centrally above a sideboard to complement traditional or coastal interiors.

Keep watercolours away from direct sunlight using UV-filtering glass, maintain low and stable relative humidity, and ensure all mounting materials are acid-free to prevent discolouration.
