FAQs

Nineteenth-century British watercolour painting flourished as a medium favoured by both professional artists and skilled amateurs, particularly capturing pastoral scenes, picturesque landscapes, and romanticised rural life.

Traditional watercolours of this era were typically executed on heavy, hand-made rag paper using finely ground mineral and plant-based pigments suspended in water-soluble binders.

Authentication involves examining the paper texture, watermark, pigment aging, signature characteristics, and framing materials, alongside consulting established artist catalogues and provenance records.

Antique watercolours pair well with traditional wooden panelling, neutral linen walls, or classic period galleries, often framed with modest gilt wood moulding to complement their historical charm.

Preservation requires framing with acid-free mats, UV-filtering glass, and placement away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent fading and foxing.
