We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, French metal artisans produced decorative vessels utilizing repousse and chasing techniques. These copper and brass urns drew inspiration from classical forms and Art Nouveau floral patterns, serving as mantelpiece ornaments in middle-class French homes.

These vessels were typically constructed using sheet copper shaped over forms or hammered into shape, combined with cast or spun brass components for rims, handles, and pedestals. Chasing and repousse techniques were employed to work detailed floral or geometric patterns directly into the sheet metal from both front and reverse sides.

Authentic pieces generally display hand-chased surface details, visible seam joins or rolled edges, and natural patination across the copper and brass surfaces. Look for traditional construction signatures, such as weighted bases, hand-cut metal collars, and uneven wear consistent with period metalware.

Pairing antique copper vessels with contemporary minimalist decor provides warm metallic contrast. Placing them on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard top, or open shelving creates visual grounding, whether displayed empty as sculptural objects or holding dried botanicals.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove surface grime. Avoid harsh chemical polishes if retaining the original aged patina is desired; instead, apply a light coat of microcrystalline wax occasionally to protect the metal from oxidisation and moisture.
