Description

Size: 8ft 6in x 6ft 0in (260 x 184cm).

Antique Afghan or Russian Ersari Turkmen ensi of traditional design.

Circa 1920.

Ensi were door hangings used to cover the entrance to a yurt, although this example may have been made for floor use.

This example is woven with a traditional Ersari design; the four panels in the middle are said to be the windows to Paradise, these are filled with bird heads. The ensi is unusual in its weave, this may point to an Afghan origin or quite possibly it was made in Turkmenistan under Russian influence for the Russian market.

The ensi is in good condition with even wear and medium pile, there is slight colour run in places, this is reflected in the price.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An ensi is a specialised type of tribal rug woven by Turkmen groups, traditionally used as a door hanging or tent flap rather than a floor covering.

Authentic pieces are typically crafted from hand-spun sheeps wool for both the pile and foundation, traditionally coloured using natural vegetable and insect-based dyes.

Authentication involves examining the knot density, wool quality, characteristic guls or tribal motifs, and the presence of natural colour variations known as abrash.

Such textiles are frequently mounted on walls as focal art pieces or used as durable floor coverings to add texture and historical contrast to contemporary spaces.

Preservation requires keeping the textile out of direct sunlight, regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, and professional cleaning when necessary to protect the fragile fibres.
