Paul Émile Machault (1800–1886) was a 19th-century French sculptor known for his allegorical and mythological works, often produced in bronze or terracotta. This fine bronze depicts Venus, goddess of love and beauty, with her son Cupid, the bringer of desire. In 19th-century decorative arts, such pairings were often used to personify the seasons; here, the warmth and fecundity of Summer are suggested through the figures’ relaxed poise and harmonious connection. The work is signed Machault to the oval base, confirming its authorship.
