A Large French Daubiere Brass 19thc Cooking Pot

19th century
Description

A Large Cooking pot from the 19thc with a wrought iron handle probably a French Daubier as some had these funnels as this does to help the cooking process. It seems to be made of brass but has copper connotations. It says : A 19th-century French daubière with a spout is a rare variation of the traditional braising pan, designed for cooking slow-simmered dishes like daube. While most daubières are rectangular or oval copper pots with a tight-fitting lid, the addition of a spout suggests it was adapted for specific kitchen tasks, such as draining liquids

This nineteenth-century French daubière braising pot belongs to the French Country style, constructed from warm brass with riveted elements and forged iron hardware. The body features a hammered brass finish with noticeable age wear, darker tarnish spots, and surface scuffs reflecting its kitchen heritage. A fitted metal lid sits on top with a simple metal wire handle, while dark wrought iron bail handles attach at either side and a solid cylindrical side handle projects from the base. The piece measures 33 cm high, 71 cm wide, and 36 cm deep. Today, this large cookware item suits a rustic farmhouse kitchen or display placement upon a kitchen island. It functions as a decorative tabletop container, hold-all, or traditional focal point in an open-plan culinary space. The open metal funnel on the side and the mixed metal tones provide distinct visual interest for interior styling without needing further modification.

A daubiere is a traditional French cookware vessel specifically designed for slow-braising meats and stews, known as daubes. Historically constructed with deep sides and a tight-fitting lid, it allowed heat and condensation to circulate evenly during prolonged cooking.

Traditional daubieres were forged primarily from heavy-gauge copper or brass to ensure optimal heat conduction. They often featured hand-riveted iron handles, and copper variants were typically lined with tin to prevent chemical reactions with acidic food.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature hand-hammered surface textures, dovetailed or brazed seams along the body, and heavy iron hardware attached with hand-hammered rivets. Irregularities in shape and signs of historical hand-tooling further indicate genuine period manufacture.

An antique brass daubiere is commonly used as a decorative display piece on kitchen islands, open shelving, or inside rustic hearths. It can also function as a planter or a centrepiece on a dining table or sideboard.

To preserve the historical patina, dust regularly with a soft cloth and avoid abrasive chemical cleaners. If a brighter finish is preferred, apply a specialised brass polish gently, avoiding harsh scrubbing over hand-hammered details.
